The High Court has temporarily stopped the decision by Commission for University Education to close down Kisii University campuses until matter filed in court is heard and determined.

The petitioners, who include parents and students of the said university, moved to court under a certificate of urgency saying that the decision to close down the campuses is drastic and unfair as it does not accord the students already in campus time to complete their studies.

The petitioners further argued that the decision to close down the university will lead to several students dropping out of school, and parents losing fees already paid as most students are working class and those working stations are within the precincts of the said campuses.

The institution announced the closure of 10 campuses among them the Nyamira, Ogembo, Eldama Ravine, Kapenguria, Kabarnet, Migori, Eldoret, Keroka, Isebania and Kehancha campuses.

The court further ordered that the students not to be transferred to other campuses of the same university.

Commission for University Education had evaluated the status of Kisii University’s 13 campuses in Nyanza and Rift Valley regions.

Contrary to the said inspection, the senior made its findings on January 20, 2016 that three campuses being Kisumu, Kericho and Kitale were recommended for partial accreditation subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions while it was recommended that the other ten be closed down.

The Commission for University Education and the CS ministry of Education have been named as respondents.

Kisii University closed its satellite campuses to comply with a government directive after recommendations made by the Commission for University Education (CUE) and the Advisory Committee on Eminent Persons (ACEP) appointed by the Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i six months ago.

All the students in the affected campuses were advised to relocate to Kisii University, Main Campus or any other campuses of Kisii University starting from the second week of January 2017.
