After taking home 1.7million shillings in a colorful event held at Sankara in Nairobi Kenya on Thursday evening, Magazine Reel family has promised nothing but a peaceful life, satisfaction and enjoyment to their readers across Kenyan Universities and the globe.
Mobile application developers participating in this years Safaricom Appwiz competition were required to develop solutions under five categories, Mobile for good and community development, smart business and cloud innovation, Financial inclusion, Youth, entertainment, Games and Media and Infrastructure and utilities.
Magazine Reel was awarded as the overall grand winner of the challenge and also top in the category of youth, entertainment, games and media by a judge bench comprising of 17 judges with individuals from IBM, Intel, media industry and teleco space.
“While there are many people who still wait to watch the news every evening and read newspapers every morning, studies have shown that there are many tech-savvy youth who would rather access the news content on the go, through their smart devices,” said Joseph Ogutu, the Director for Strategy and Innovation at Safaricom.
He added, “Through the Safaricom Appwiz Challenge, we continue to support young entrepreneurs interested in establishing Mobile and ICT start-ups in Kenya through mentorship, training and rapid product development to ensure that start-ups develop and provide innovative, quality and relevant solutions to address challenges and needs faced by our consumers.”
Ujirani, a community based security application, won in the Mobile for Good and Community Development category, while Smart Travel took home the top prize in the Infrastructure and Utilities category. Smart Travel provides solutions for motorists with road information and also helps them know whether they have exceeded their alcohol per sitting.
While being interviewed after the event, Mr. Dennis Shisia one of the developers dedicated the win to all the students in institutions of higher learning. He said that they will now focus on answering the ‘what is happening questions’ arising from many students and staff in the said institutions.
Fredrick Oginga, David Mabiria, George Wainaina, Natalye Stayse and Mr Barasa all said in unison that it was for the good of the students that it went the way of Magazine Reel.
“Comrades must now enjoy,”they shouted with happiness. “We congratulate the GuideRig Company who have emerged the runners up and all the category winners too”,Mr Mabiria added on behalf of the team.

The family also thanks all the competitors who took part in the Safaricom appwiz challenge 2014 including the lecturers and mentors who took the team through educative sessions.
