Enthusiastic Applicants Attend Safaricom Appwiz Hack-a-thon @IbizAfrica

The Safaricom App Wiz Challenge which is a three months long accelerator program that aims to help selected innovators leveraging on mobile technology move from idea/prototype to product or service within an incubation period of 3 months had its hack-a-thon being held today. The challenge had attracted more than 300 applicants with over 200 mobile solutions. The Telco company kicked its 2015 programme on 16th July 2015 and it is set to run till the 26th of November 2015 when winners of the challenge will be announced.

The program is an initiative of Safaricom LTD in collaboration with @iBizAfrica- Strathmore University. Safaricom App wiz challenge aims to become the best mobile startup accelerator program in the East African region launching successful start-ups into the Kenyan market. The program entails a training curriculum specifically tailored for technology startups, mentoring and coaching from industry/subject matter experts and successful entrepreneurs. Over the last two years the program has helped launch close to 30 startup companies. Some of the companies include M-Ledger and Magazine Reel who were the winners of Appwiz 2014.

Winners of the Safaricom Appwiz Developer Challenge will receive the following in cash prizes

  1. Grand Prize Winner – Kshs.1.5 million (Payable in 3 installments based on milestone achievement)
  2. 1st Runner-up – Kshs.1 million (Payable in 3 installments based on milestone achievement)
  3. 2nd Runner-up – Kshs.500,000 (Payable in 2 installments based on milestone achievement)

Today’s forum which saw more than 150 participants travel to @IbizAfrica was tailored to help out on any issues or queries on the Developer Challenge. The organizers talked about the use the portal, submissions and deadlines, incubation mechanics, technical questions and updates on commercialization models.

Groups which will have met all the requirements set out by the judges will start their incubation period on 07 September 2015. All the groups will be subjected to mentor-ship programmes that will see them end up with required products for the target market.

After the three month Incubation period, the participants will be subjected to a judging session on 24th November 2015. The judging session will take place at a venue which will be disclosed in the course of the incubation period. This will see the judges settle on the best application which will be declared the winner of Safaricom Appwiz 2015 on 26th November 2015.
