Kenyatta University ‘Vultures’ made their winning statements heard as they outran Moi University in their second match of the tournament. The match which was marred with a lot of physical play was not an easy affair for the Thika road based win as many players had to sit out of play due to indiscipline.
Kenyatta University dominated the better part of the match as they got an early 13th-minute goal from midfielder Owen Jacob, the Kenya Hockey Premier league side continue to hold the match with promising attacks from skipper Lawrence Makhatsa and his attacking counterpart Brayan Kiplimo. Moi University’s forward Vincent Odhiambo who turns out in the Kenya Hockey Premier league for Butali warriors was at his best of form as he tried getting past the Vultures defense but could not beat Dave Makori at all angles as the defender was at his best throughout the match.
Later on in the 25th-minute midfielder Brian Dominic made his mark with a well-executed goal to seal his side’s win. Although the Eldoret-based side was down, they were not reluctant in attacking as Nicqsuid Osoro made a perfect dribble past the Vultures defense to fire a shot past custodian Robby Moturi only but to hit the crossbar in the 30th minute.
In another pool B match of the day Rongo University came down from 2-0 and took control of the match to beat Pwani University in the final minutes of the game with a 3-2 final score. Pwani University got the lead in the 11th minute of the match through Nyasani Stephen as he got past his marker with a perfect shot after being perfectly set up by midfielder Evason Alulu. The coastal based dominated the better part of the first half creating many scoring opportunities but could not utilize them. In the 40th minute, Evason Alulu got a clear shot past Felix Otieno the Rongo University shot-stopper to make the scores 2-0 early in the second half.
Pwani were later on in the 50th minute punished with a penalty stroke by umpire Emmanuel Simiyu due to a defensive mistake in the goal area, Abiud Lemiota utilized the golden chance by converting the penalty stroke to bring back his side to the match. The Pwani defense which turned to be weak in the 52nd minute was punished by Kennedy Ogutu who did not any chances after a perfect dribble and scored the fourth goal of the match. Rongo University who came into the match as underdogs proved to have a fighting spirit as they did not give up to the last minute as their struggle was rewarded by a penalty corner goal by Kennedy Ogutu who was at his best to put a brace to his name in their first match of the tournament.
Strathmore University knocked out
Another surprising moment of the tournament in its early stages when Kenya Hockey Premier League champions were knocked out of the tournament with no win to their name. The Nairobi-west based side registered no win in their group matches as they are ranked at the bottom of the pool standings, Strathmore who produced the best player of the year in the Kenyan Hockey Premier league were knocked out with only one point from a draw with University of Nairobi who placed second in the three-sided pool A. Kisii University continued their winning ways to top pool A by getting past University of Nairobi with a 3-2 win in their second match of the tournament.
In other Hockey men’s matches of the day, United States International University- Africa struggled to record their first win of the day by beating University of Eldoret 1-0 by a score from defender Samson Ratia.
Hosts Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) had a good record as they topped pool D by beating Maseno University 2-1 in their first match and edging out Kenya Methodist University 4-1 in their second match of the day.
In the Hockey Ladies matches, United States International University- Africa came down from 2-0 to beat Kenyatta University ladies 3-2 who displayed a well-organized and mature game with amazing performances from their custodian Daisy Odera and defender Susan Wafula who was not easily beaten.
Hosts JKUAT ladies recorded a 1-0 win past the resilient University of Nairobi which boasts of almost half of the team who turn out for Chase Bank Amiras in the Kenya Hockey Womens’ Premier League. Strathmore University ladies beat the University of Eldoret 1-0 while Moi University ladies came out with a point from their barren draw with Mount Kenya University.
