Few days after the launch of the ICT Club at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, members of the club had a rare chance to meet and interact with the Marketing Director for Magazine Reel Mr. Dennis Shisia.

Magazine Reel is the best online Kenyan Campus News Site sharing stories and information concerning all Kenyan campuses. The company won over one million Kenyan shillings in the 2014 Safaricom Appwiz Challenge.

Speaking to the students, Mr. Shisia encouraged all ICT Club members with tech innovations to register for various funding including the Safaricom Appwiz Challenge.

“It’s time Nakuru County produced more tech startups that are geared towards developing this country,” Shisia said.

Present during the 2 hour presentation were over 30 members of the ICT Club from JKUAT-Nakuru Campus together with the Club’s founder Dickson Owuor Marienga. On his part, Mr. Marienga told the JKUAT students that they were lucky to have somebody from a known company like Magazine Reel take their time to talk to them on entrepreneurship.

“Other people would charge us expensively to come and talk to us about such a sensitive topic”, Mr. Marienga noted.

Speaking on Mobile App Development and what makes a good Mobile Application, Shisia said that a good mobile app should be able to address and solve a problem while making money for the developer.

“Unless you are a charitable organization or you eat stones, then your innovation should be able to pay your bills”, Shisia noted adding that “Many awesome mobile applications will never see the light of the day because they lack a viable revenue model”

Students took turn to speak to Dennis about Magazine Reel and how they can be part of the writers representing JKUAT-Nakuru. Others wanted to know how they can register for the Safaricom Appwiz Challenge.
