Just days after a first year Egerton University Engineering student was caught for attempting to kidnap a 9-year old girl in Mois Bridge in Uasin Gishu County, another kidnapping case is reported. This time round, it’s a student of Moi University in Eldoret who was arrested after he allegedly attempted to kidnap a three-year-old girl.
According to Police reports, the fourth year student had allegedly demanded a Sh3 million ransom from the child’s mother, Beatrice Musirya, who is a Principal Magistrate at the Kapsabet Courts. This time round, the suspect did not waylay the child on her way to school, he went to their house.
The suspect is alleged to have gone to the magistrate’s Elgon View Estate home in Eldoret and told the house help he was there to repair electronics and some failed power cables. He then attempted to kidnap the toddler. The Egerton University suspected kidnappers waylaid the 9-year old girl they tried to kidnap on her way to school.
“Thirty minutes after I had left the house, I received a text and when I called my house help, she did not pick up her phone. This prompted me to call a friend who was in town to go to my house and find out what was going on,” Ms Musirya said.
An hour later, her friend called with the shocking news that the person was a kidnapper demanding Sh3 million.
“I immediately called the security man at the gate and the police as I drove back. They responded swiftly and arrested the culprit in the act,” Musirya said.
The increasing kidnapping cases by University students may be an indicator of a societal disconnect that if not addressed well may lead to a more fatal tradition. The Moi University student is being held by the police pending further investigations into the incident.
