At the mention of the word “Skin Bleaching” in Kenya, the first name that knocks in the mind is Vera Sidika. But what really does it mean to bleach? What is used to bleach? Who are some of the celebrities in Africa who have bleached and Why. what are some of the effects of bleaching, is it worth it? .Until we answer those questions?
Skin bleaching, also known as skin lightening is the use of chemicals to lighten the skin tone by pulling down the concentration of melanin .As at now, many chemicals have been invented for this purpose. Some have proved positive while some have gone all the way to affect the skin and make it look ugly.
The following are some of the notable names in the entertainment industry who have undergone Skin lightening.
The first reason Vera gave for whitening her skin was that the society does not appreciate dark women as beautiful; the second reason was that her body is her office; she needed therefore to make it attractive as possible. Her decision was not met well by majority of Kenyans accused her of lacking morals, She would later respond by saying that she is not a role model to anybody.
The dancehall star currently behind bars has also a skin bleaching line on his name. Vibes move was not met well by his fans, he would later respond by saying that he is more comfortable with his new image and that he has no problem with Blacks bleaching their skin.
The model who has rocked the Runway in Ghana and is currently one of the most paid models gave reasons that she needed to be comfortable and the only way she was going to do that was to lower the ton of her skin.
Sosa is a renowned baseball star, he would later reveal on a TV interview that the bleach was as a result of some cream he had been applying daily before going to bed and the bright TV lights that made his skin to whiten. This was after social media went viral with allegations that he has undergone surgery to look like Michael Jackson.
The South African songstress Mshoza who shocked the world by requesting for skin lightening products on her birthday. She would later reveal that she had consulted three dermatologists to help achieve the same. She reveals that it’s something she always wanted to do and has nothing with self esteem. She ended by throwing salvos at ladies scorning her yet they buy weaves.
Idi Eno is celebrated by many, adored by many, you have probably seen her on TV on various afro cinema movies .Ini who is known globally with her dark and soft skin was met with force mainly from her fellow actors and actress in Nigeria. This was after she had posted pictures of her “Fresh” skin on instagram.
The rapper who has undergone many surgeries in a bid to fix her body said that bleaching her skin was to look more cute and fresh.
Irene is one of the most celebrated models in the African continent. Former model Irene Major, Irene later opened up and said that she feels lighter in her light skin. She is reported to have spent a fortune to achieve the whitened skin. The former Cameroonian model is said to have lightened her skin for a period of seven years .Irene says that her decision had nothing to do with her race or continent.
What are some of the negative effects? .Is black not beauty?
Some of the effects for bleaching include leukemia, kidney failure, skin discoloration, liver cancer amongst others. Most African ladies would want to lighten their skin in pursuit of beauty. Shifting our focus to the people’s magazine 2014 who named Lupita Nyongo the world’s most beautiful woman.Lupita is dark and simply beautiful. The question then is, Are African ladies of low self esteem?
