University lecturers have taken to the streets of Nairobi to protest the Jailing of KMPDU officials for contempt of court. The doctors were yesterday sentenced to a one month jail term at the Industrial area prison following their failure to adhere to regulations issued by the labor court last month.
The university dons led by UASU officials are reportedly in a running battle with the police along the University way just close to the University of Nairobi. The dons are carrying placards in solidarity with doctors and others calling for the implementation of their own CBA. The doctors have insisted that the government must commit to implement CBA Seven and release the jailed doctors before they agree on a return to work formulae.
The recent developments comes only two days after the government provided a sum of 10 billion shillings for the striking lecturers to call of the strike. The lecturers led by UASU officials came out to quash the proposal from the government arguing that they need atleast 45 billion shillings to call off the strike. The lecturers are on their 3rd week on strike and already close to four universities have been closed indefinitely. UASU maintains that the strike is still on and that it will not end until when the government will agree to meet the CBA 2015 requirements.
