Maseno University students have only days to the election date. The university’s electoral commission is yet to give a go ahead to incoming politicians to kick off their campaigns. This comes even as students complain that time allocated for campaigns will not be enough as required. The electoral body reduced campaign days to 5 which is less than the previously allowed duration.
According to a notice issued on the university website, aspirants for SOMU posts are required to submit their nomination papers to the electoral body managing the student’s polls by today August 26, 2016. Today will also be a historic day in the history of the union, the current leadership is expected to relinquish their posts and allow the current executive to be dissolved.
The notice issued on Monday, August 22 indicated that aspirants shall be allowed to campaign for five days, starting from September 5th to 10th.
The SOMU elections set for September 12 and 13th at Maseno university’s main campus in Kisumu has drawn interest among several student politicians who have already expressed their desire to clinch top posts in the students union.
The electoral body has indicated that polls for the executive directors and congress persons for the union will be held on 12th September, separately from presidential polls slated for September 13th.
The body has also made it clear that elect student leaders will be subsequently announced and later sworn in by the institution’s legal officer on 14th September at Maseno University’s graduation square.
A first year nursing student died during the 2015 student campaigns leading to several days unrest and intolerance among students that forced the university council to suspend the semester for a month spilling it over to January this year due to the indefinite closure on 13th November 2015. The violence saw some of the politicians locked out of the race and others taken to court to answer to charges of incitement.
