Taita Taveta university Vice chancellor has issued a notice informing students that they are required to be at the institution and attend a function to be graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The President who started his four days tour at the coast today is expected to Inspect the School of Mining within the TTUC compound. The President together with other leaders are expected at the university on Saturday 11th March 2017.
“This is to inform you that on Saturday 11th May 2017 shall be considered like any other normal day at the university. This is because we are expecting his Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta. He will be inspecting the national mining institute”, a message from the Vice chancellor reads in part.
According to the memo, all students and members of staff are expected to be at the institution on the said date. The Vice chancellor ordered all including lecturers on strike to ensure that they attend the event and engage with the President. The lecturers including those at Taita Taveta University have been on strike for the last one and half months.
“…All staff and students are required to be present at the university to attend this event. The venue for the event will be the centre for Mines Building. Let us all assemble there at 9.00 am without fail”, the memo reads.
The university has also asked every student and staff to carry their identification documents due to the thorough security scrutiny that will take place on the said date. The notice informs them that anyone who comes late will be locked out of the event.
It is not yet clear if the lecturers will attend the said event. The dons via UASU rejected yet again another salary increase offer from the government demanding nothing short of 30% increase per year for the next four years.
