University of Nairobi (UoN) yet again was ranked the best at the 2014 Nairobi International Trade Fair. The university took top positions in various categories.
The annual event which accords Universities a platform to share information with stakeholders among them potential students, parents and the general public on its programme and services, and its role in national development went down the whole of last week at the ASK Nairobi showgrounds.
The University stands displayed mostly research innovations, food crops and farm animals which were in line with this year’s trade fair theme- ‘Enhancing Technology in Agriculture and Industry for Food Security and National Growth.
UoN was rated first position in best innovation and invention stand and second position in best university stand, best institution of higher learning in developing and advanced technology, best engineering based institution of higher learning and best stand that promotes national cohesion and integration development. The University also won prizes in farm and animal produce categories.
Among the innovations the UoN displayed included a digital abattoir, a fruit ripening test device that grades fruits according to how ripe they are, projects on automated farming using mobile phone technology, research on bio-fertilization farming as an alternative to chemical fertilization farming, research on the anti-cancer potential of medicinal plants from Kakamega as well as displays on youth activities, empowerment and capacity building, social responsibility and community initiatives.
The institution has also been able to maintain their Webometrics ranking of the top universities in Kenya, Africa and the world in general. This years trade fair awards were presented to UoN’s Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi by the President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta.
