UoN Drops to Number 47 as Moi and Egerton Shine in the Latest Webometrics Ranking

The latest University web ranking, (July 2017) puts Moi University ahead of the oldest institution of higher learning, University of Nairobi (UoN), which has always ranked top, this follows the latest Webometrics rankings of the best Universities in Kenya.

UoN has dropped to number 47 in the country falling University of Kabianga (42), Embu University College (39) and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (46).

Michuki Technical Institute, Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), African Virtual University and Mount Kenya University (MKU) are among the 20 best institutions of higher learning in the country according to Webometrics.

Strathmore University has been ranked at position six (6) and first (1) in a pool of private institutions of higher learning in the country.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) close the top ten rank.

The ranking tool which considers the quality of academic programs being offered in institutions also placed Moi University at position 19 following Makerere University (16) closely in Subsaharan Africa, leading being the University of Capetown in South Africa.

Egerton University is at position 23, Kenyatta University (51), JKUAT (67), Maseno University (112) and Strathmore University (162) in Africa.

Though many students from the UoN have faulted this ranking, many others from various Universities in the country term it as credible and reliable. Whereas other institutions are celebrating their positions, it is not yet clear why the UoN failed to make the cut in terms of quality of programs that are being offered at the institution. Much more worrying is that a number of its constituent colleges ranked above the mother of all Universities in Kenya.
