Just a month after Professor Olive Mugenda named Professor Wainaina as the Acting Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University. The former VC named her interim successor in her final Senate meeting.
Olive Mugenda was the first ever female Vice Chancellor in a public university in Kenya being joined by Prof Mabel Imbuga of JKUAT. She left a legacy like no other. She is the most decorated Vice Chancellor of all times. In her time in the institution, she steered it to be among the top 2 best universities in Kenya. The University is now the fastest growing in East and Central Africa. Some of the modern structures so far put in place include, The KU TV, KU Campanile, KU ultramodern hostels, KU Mall, KU Post Modern Library, KU Business Incubation Building, KU Modern Hospital and many more.
Prof Mugenda made expansion of facilities at the university, raising student enrollment to the current 70,000 — the highest in the country. When she left, the university had 3,500 staff members.
The commission for University Education is set to start the selection process of a new Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor. The recruitment will be based on competence, fairness and transparency said the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
“Becoming a successor in academics and being successor in leadership are two different things. We will be looking for someone with a rich background, not only in academics but also with demonstrable leadership skills,” he said on Tuesday.
