Chuka University is set to open a campus in Tharaka in September.
Addressing a press conference in his office, Chuka University Vice Chancellor Erastus Njoka said the campus will be located at Gatunga Secondary School ground and will enrol its first students in September.
Prof Njoka said the establishment of the Gatunga Campus has been approved by President Uhuru Kenyatta after meeting leaders from Tharaka-Nithi. The leaders paid President Kenyatta a courtesy call at State House on June 12.
He said the new campus will reduce the cost of learning as students from the area will be able to commute to the university.
Tharaka MP Mburi Muiru said the campus will also offer employment opportunities to the local community.
“The institution will offer many job opportunities to the locals including supplying food and other items,” said the MP.
He called on the residents and other leaders to “embrace the opportunity and own the campus by offering their support where needed”.
The County Commissioner Charles Monari said the campus will help develop the region.
“We expect more services like banks and hostels in the area because a university is a big institution which accommodates many people,” said Mr Monari.
