Kilifi County Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi has expressed his heartfelt remorse after defying the self-quarantine directive put for those traveling from outside the country.
Mr. Saburi was on Sunday, March 22 forced into isolation after refusing to comply with the protocols after arriving from Germany.
His act sparked fury across the country the Health CS Mutahi Kagwe saying he will be charged after the completion of his quarantine.
The DG, after all, tested positive for the virus eliciting anxiety after being said he had been in meetings and social events mingling with people.
Quoted in a local daily, Saburi now wants Kenyans to forgive him saying he is regretting his actions.
“I am very remorseful for bringing anxiety on Coronavirus spread in Kilifi County and the entire country and hope that people will find a heart to forgive me,” he said.
He defended himself saying there were no procedures at the airport upon his arrival and that he never did whatever he did intentionally.
“There were no clear guidelines set, upon my return, I did not do that intentionally. I cannot be careless enough to roam around infecting other people knowing well that I have Covid-19. All those years I have kept a clean bill of conduct. I have worked diligently and responsibly, discharging my duties as both CEC and deputy governor,” Amason Kingi’s DG said.
He admitted having attended funerals and other fairs but did that without having in his thinking, the possibility of having the COVID-19 virus and the potential danger he was presenting to the other uninfected members of the public.
“I attended funeral services to condole with the bereaved families and other gatherings in my rural home in Rabai bearing in mind the nature of my job and position in society,”
“My governor had cleared me to attend the fair, the county secretary gave me a letter confirming the same. I have two residences in Mombasa where I live with my children and spouse. I went to a supermarket to by food and that is when I was accused of disregarding the quarantine order,” he stated.
Those who were involved in his arrest and those reported to have had contact with Saburi were also put under isolation.
