The Kitui County Government and the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to have the university’s Medical Sciences students undergo internship at the Kitui County Referral Hospital.
The MOU was signed at the Kitui County Governor’s office by the County Health and Sanitation Minister, Ruth Koki Mwanzia and the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Geoffrey Muluvi. Muluvi said they will start nursing and clinical trainings at the university by September 2015.
“We will start the public health and nursing. And pharmacy and medical laboratory sciences will,” the don said. “The National Council of Nurses has been awaiting for this MOU to allow us to proceed with the programme,” he added. He said the programme will provide quality health care services to the county
The Vice Chancellor at the same time disclosed that the World Bank had given the university Ksh 350 million to establish the School of Civil Engineering.
. “My Government assures the SEKU leadership of our commitment to our obligations as stated in the MOU or additional obligations which might arise from time to time and agreed upon by both parties. As a county where SEKU is located, our County Government will render support to the university to enable it to realize its vision of becoming globally competitive centre of excellence in teaching, research innovation and service,” the Governor said.
The Governor disclosed that with a total of 230 hospitals, Kitui County had the highest number of hospitals in Kenya as indicated in the master list of the facilities in the District Health Information System (DHIS).
