Laikipia university main campus and all its branches has been closed down indefinitely. Following a senate meeting held yesterday Tuesday, the university management released a notice that all students leave the institution by today until an unknown date.
“The University Senate in its sitting of Tuesday 31st January, 2017 decided to close the University and all the satellite campuses indefinitely”, Read the notice posted in the university website.
“All students are therefore instructed to vacate the University premises by Wednesday 1st February,2017 at 5.00pm. Those residing within the University Halls of residence are requested to remove all their personal belongings”, The notice directed the students.
The senate in its ruling said that they have taken the initiative to close the institution following a two week long lecturers strike which has paralyzed learning and other activities.
UASU officials came out late last week to deny reports that had graced the media that the lecturers strike had been called off. The officials denied reports that they had been convinced by education CS Dr Fred Matiang’i to postpone the strike till March 1st 2017.
University lecturers are seeking a pay rise in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement between UASU and the government back in 2013. The dons joins their medical colleagues in calling for the implementation of the 2013 CBA. The doctors have been on strike for more than 2 months.
Laikipia university closure comes on the brink of a threat from students at Technical University of Mombasa who yesterday said that they will force closure of the coast based varsity if the government fails to convince lecturers to go back to work.
