Nairobi City Thunder Won 82-60 Against USIU-A


Nairobi City Thunder won 82-60 in a one-sided men premier league encounter against 2015 playoffs finalist United States International University- Africa (USIU-A) on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

It was USIU-A who set the pace in the opening five minutes of first quarter leading 5-0 as Abel Nson opened with a three-pointer. Griffin Ligare who started on the bench for Thunder came on with 5:10 on the clock and scored a basket with his first touch of the ball for 7-6 to the students.

Ligare’s second basket tied scores 9-9 and Kevin Chogo gave Thunder the lead at 11-9. Kevin Kigotho then made a basket as USIU-A regained the lead at 12-11 but Adams Njoroge’s three-pointer tied scores 14-14.

Chogo then gave Thunder a 17-14 lead from a three-point play and went on to win the quarter 21-15.

Thunder won second quarter 23-15 having taken the biggest lead of 15 points at 41-26 and led 44-30 at halftime. Second half was an easy ride for Thunder as they scored easy baskets.

Chogo did a lot of rebounding while Ligare delivered killer passes that did lots of damage. In third quarter, they had the biggest lead of 22 points at 61-39 and won the quarter 20-13.

The lead stretched to 27 points in fourth quarter at 70-43 as Thunder won 18-17. Chogo scored the first and last baskets to top score for Thunder with a game high 31 points while Ligare scored 29. Kigotho scored 20 points for USIU-A and Christian Mulumba added 12.

Equity edge hosts Nakuru

Equity Bank won on the road beating Nakuru Club 71-61 at Menengai High School. Nakuru led 36-35 at halftime after winning first quarter 19-11 and Equity the second 24-17.

Equity’s 22-7 win in third quarter made all the difference even as Nakuru took home the fourth 18-14.

Luke Felix top scored for Equity with 15 points and Kenneth Wena added 10. For Nakuru, James Okerio scored 16 points and Elvis Hawie added 11.

Defending champions Ulinzi Warriors beat Strathmore University 86-48 with quarterly scores of 19-14, 25-3, 11-15 and 31-16.

Ulinzi scored 30 points from the three-point line. Eric Mutoro top scored with 25 points including three three-pointers, Dieter Okoth made four three-pointers to add 14 points while Bernard Mufutu had 12. Martin Mugambi scored four three-pointers to top score for Strathmore with 17 points.

In men’s division one, Umoja beat 4-Christ 64-47, MKU Thika won 59-51 over Don Bosco, Blazers beat Riara University 61-53 and EMYBA won 33-32 over Baraka Xtreme. Two games were played in women division one with Daystar University beating Strathmore University 57-40 and Zetech University won 50-31 over Gladiators.
