Dedan Kimathi University has a public road that is passing through the school all the way to Nanyuki. Part of the road is now set to be closed from being used by members of the public. The members of the public will be required to pass through another road that is being newly constructed.

The new road will pass between the university and the university animal’s conservancy. This comes as a promise given by the former head of state H.E Mwai Kibaki who promised that the government will build an alternative road for the public to use on their way to Nanyuki.

H.E  Mwai Kibaki promised that during the commissioning of the University to become a full fledged University in the December year 2012. During the occasion, President Kibaki received a memento in recognition of his service to the university, including being the Chairman of the former Board of Trustees of Kimathi Institute of Technology.

The building of an alternative road comes as a reprieve for the students as they have suffered a series of robberies due to that road being open to the public. There was drama once during which a cashier at the students mess was ferrying on foot an undisclosed amount of cash towards the administration .

On reaching the road somebody out of the blues came with a bike shot in the air to scare the cashier and the security guards at the gate. She was forced to let go the cash she had and the robber went towards Nanyuki.( The students mess is on one side of the university and you have to cross the road to go to the administration).

The hostels along this road also have been attacked many times even prompting the students to go on strike. The robbers are said to come from Majengo which is a shanty in Nyeri town where most of the residents are said to be members of the outlawed Mungiki sect. The new road is being constructed by the ministry of roads in conjunction with the county government.
