The Mau-Egerton University Cross Country is set to happen on 8th of February 2014. This will be the first ever University-organized athletics event to be included in the annual Kenya Athletics Association’s Calender. The 2014 edition of the Mau-Egerton University Cross Country marks the start of an annual event that will not only be recognized by the Egerton University Administration, but also by the KAA.
There will be 6KM and 8KM races. The routes for the races are yet to be mapped out as the Organizing Committee is set to meet this Tuesday.
What’s more? For simply popularizing the event on social media, registering to participate or inviting your friends to participate, you stand a chance to win goodies! T-shirts, Airtime and Tickets will be up for grabs as from 25th January to 7th February. Keep it Magazine Reel for that.
Speaking to Magazine Reel, the SUEU Director Gender, Sports and Entertainment said that the event is for the students and therefore they should come out in large numbers to participate and make history in the KAA Calender. “The winners in the student categories of 8 and 6 km races will be awarded with cash prizes with the winner receiving 50k”, he said adding that “It will also be a chance that student athletes will meet managers and sponsors in the Kenyan athletes world.”
The money raised from the Cross Country will be used in the rehabilitation of the Mau ecosystem and the Njoro River. The middle section of the Njoro River which surrounds the premier Kenyan Agricultural University has been in bad condition with residents using the water for almost everything, including relieving themselves and drinking. The University set out on a rehabilitation process that is aimed at keeping the water clean and free from human and animal encroachment.
Students and guests will also get an opportunity to plant trees along the Njoro River on the material day. The day will be fun-filled according to the Director. The participants and guests will also get a chance to learn more on environmental awareness.
