SportPesa Chief Reveals Exact Date when the Company will be Back in Kenya

SportPesa Multibet

SportPesa Chief Executive Officer Ronald Karauri has highlighted the firm’s efforts to return to the Kenyan market.

SportPesa was among gambling companies that shut down operations in the country over new tax regulations, including a 20% excise tax on all betting stakes.

At the time, the company argued the measures were “based on a fundamental misunderstanding” by then Treasury cabinet secretary Henry Rotich.

A series of court battles that followed soon after saw SportPesa finally bow out as they resolved to spread their tentacles in Tanzania and Europe.

And after months of uncertainty, Karauri has hinted the giant betting company is still keen to resume operations in the country.

Responding to a tweet inquiring on when Kenyans should expect the firm to re-enter the market, Karauri revealed they have already made an application to have their license renewed.

“I have so many people asking this question. We did not get our license renewed in 2019. We submitted our application to BCLB some months ago and we are still waiting for feedback,” the SportPesa chief tweeted back.

In Kenya, the licencing process takes about 60 days from the day of the application. This implies that SportPesa if approved, might be launching into the market before end of next month.

Many people are still waiting to have the firm back into the country with others clearly stating that they left betting and decided to wait for their return when they left. The company offered a very lucrative Jackpot issuing bonuses of up to millions of shillings every week.

Others like Betika have tried to match SportPesa’s effort by introducing grand jackpot worth 100 million but it is not appealing as the SportPesa Mega Jackpot which had already won two individuals more than 200 million shillings each.
