Since its closure last year, SportPesa has been anticipated a return to the Kenyan market, a move yet to materialize. The betting site had a few months ago indicated a hope of a comeback when they deposited their applications with the BCLB. They also revamped their site which had been closed and made it possible for Kenyans to register afresh. Infact, on the first day of launching the newly revamped site, some Kenyans were even able to register and deposit their funds to their wallets via the old Paybill Numbers which had been suspended.
When asked about the return of the company to the market about 6 months ago, the SportPesa ceo Ronald Karauri noted that the firm looks forward to relaunch their services in the country but indicated that the government through BCLB was still scrutinizing their applications. Each month, there has been a renewed information from unknown quarters indicating that the company is soon launching, all which have been dismissed by the firm.
Though not certain on this point, SportPesa might be making many Kenyans to believe that they will have a chance to regain what they had lost to the firm during its four-year reign but in reality, they are less likely to come back after suffering various setbacks in other parts of the world. SportPesa seems to be enjoying their stay in Tanzania where they have invested heavily.
The recent move by Kenyan legislators to scrap off the 20% tax regulations which made firms including Betin to exit the market seems to be in line with SportPesa’s conditions laid out then if there comeback was anything to be realized. The firm had noted that they will be back in the country if the outrageous tax requirement is removed in its entirety. It is under this assumption that Kenyans are still glued on the hope that the betting company with a multi-million shilling Mega Jackpot will be back soon. The company on their part, has maintained their common response since December last year; only indicating that they are waiting for a go ahead from BCLB. Folks, probably, it is time to move on to other sites. SportPesa will take long before coming back to Kenya.
