19th October, isn’t just ordinary Monday for the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) fraternity as the institution has been pressed to a closure till further notice after turbulent tum students staged a demonstration. The demonstrations which seemed peaceful, turned nasty when the students resolved to stone buildings within the versity shattering a good number of window glasses., before setting two garbage collecting lorries belonging to Mombasa County into fire.
The demonstrations comes amidst tensions that has been engulfing the versity over the last few weeks. According to TUMSO president Desmond Ocharo (governor), the students were opposed to unnecessary increased fees without their consent about 6-9%, deregistration of students, discontinuation of students and the scrapping of supplementary and special examinations.
Chaos overpowered every situation as it was difficult for even students leaders to address the media as students jostled to get captured by the media practitioners cameras,. The situation worsened immediately the police arrived and started shooting on air in their quest to contain the situation which perpetually deteriorated. Few students accrued untold misery and pain after they came head on with stones, the activities which saw business Stand still along Tudor – Nyali road as unknown number of students were arrested.
A notice from the Vice Chancellor ‘s office quickly circulated across all social media platforms, informing students that the University has been closed indefinitely till further notice due to their unruly behavior and every student had one hour to vacate the versity premises.
@MagazineReel uncovered that the notice has been received with a mixture of feelings from students, others were happy that closure of the versity will add them enough time complete their assignments and revise for their CATs. On the other hand, Fridah okeiga a second year student pursuing Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and mass communication had nothing to smile on as termed it wastage of time and she wanted to finish school quickly and get married ‘”si tunataka tumalize shule mapema tuoleke tupate watoto “she revealed.
Tension and speculations now remain elephant as students monologue whether the versity will be closed for some weeks or January as it happened to University of Eldoret (UOE) who suspended some sections of students till January 2016.
